Sprint said it was coming, and lo and behold, the carrier has proven to be true to its word. Here on the final day of September, the year 2010, Sprint has issued a highly anticipated firmware update for the Epic 4G. We're told that it'll be pushed automatically to phones, bringing along four major fixes: WiFi standby battery drain, Amazon MP3 cannot download in 4G, large emails lag in upload speeds and increased 3G upload speeds. The new version is S:D700.0.5S.DI18, should take seven or eight minutes to download and will be beamed across The Now Network over the course of the next few days. Is that a congregation celebrating off in the middle distance? Sure is.Sprint Epic 4G update now rolling out, promises 'increased 3G upload speeds' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 15:45:00 EDT. Samsung AQ100 reviewed and found partially-worthy of Flipper glamour shots
PhotographyBlog has indulged us with a thorough review of Samsung's 12.2 megapixel WP10 waterproof compact -- known as the AQ100 stateside -- and their takeaways are mixed. One major concern is that the screen misleadingly makes photos appear overexposed. Its slow 5x zoom, run of the mill feature set and measly battery life good for approximately 150 shots per charge doesn't improve the situation; nor does the lack of separate charger for juicing dead spares while using the camera. That said, an included HDMI port, a clever SmartAuto shooting mode, and relatively quick two second start up time does help balance the equation. Throw in the fact that it's waterproof up to 3 meters, takes decent imagery, and has an MSRP of $199 with street prices dipping even lower and they concede it's not a terrible proposition as a laid-back compact. Whether it's a better deal than a slew of other Cousteau-worthy options released this year such as the Finepix XP10, Sony TX5, or Pentax Optio w90 is still something we'll leave you to mull over. Can you really quantify the value of your camera color matching the water you're shooting in though? For more details, read the full review at the source link below.Samsung AQ100 reviewed and found partially-worthy of Flipper glamour shots originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 09:26:00 EDT. First Super Hi-Vision broadcast from UK to Japan is one for the geeklopedia
Super Hi-Vision is still very experimental, but the BBC and NHK's first UK-to-Tokyo SHV broadcast trial of a live musical set by the The Charlatans hints it is inching closer to commercial viability. A NHK-developed camera -- one of three in existence -- made it all possible, and featured a specialized lens and optical data transmitter to handle the retina-confounding 7680 x 4320 pixel signal. This SHV trial was also the first to use a blazingly fast 24Gb/s internet connection to broadcast in lieu of more expensive satellite transmissions used in previous tests. As if the brouhaha wasn't bleeding-edge enough, a lucky few at the BBC could even view the show on a prototype 103-inch plasma television developed by NHK to see a mere quarter of the signal's massive resolution. Sure, this may not be the kind of event kids will learn about in class someday, but it certainly makes us feel like giddy little school boys. To learn more, watch a behind the scenes BBC video on the event embedded after the break.

Xbox Live Fall 2010 Dashboard Update preview: ESPN, Netflix search, Kinect, and more! (Update)
Shortly before Kinect hits store shelves on November 4th, Microsoft plans on rolling out the Fall Update to Xbox Live -- even sooner for those who signed up for the preview program. That shouldn't come as much of a surprise, really: even without the numerous leaks, the fall update is a longstanding tradition for the almost five-year-old console, and the company devoted a large chunk of its E3 2010 presentation to talk about the biggest additions. That includes Netflix search (finally!), Zune music, and an entertainment hub for a certain worldwide sports broadcaster... ESPN. We've had a chance to spend some time at home with the Fall Update, follow us after the break for our full impressions!
Update: As both Joystiq and a number of tipsters have alerted us, Microsoft has pulled the large, wooden lever in its dark underground lair that allows for the Fall Update to trickle out and assimilate itself into the consoles of those smart enough to sign up for the preview program. If you receive a prompt upon signing in, rejoice! If not, well, have patience!

Bookmarklet lets you destroy Web pages one element at a time, Asteroids style!
AdBlock is so lame. I mean, all it does it prevent ads from being displayed on Web pages. Where's the sport? Where are the explosions? I want some satisfaction from my advert eradication! Satisfaction like the kind you can only find in vintage arcade games.
Thankfully there's this incredibly practical bookmarklet that turns any website into a search-and-destroy mission. Click your button, and the ship appears. You're then free to fly around and blast any element to pieces. So long, Eric Schmidt! Take that, Evony banner!
And no, I don't actually expect anyone to replace AdBlock with this. At least not until it comes with its own retro soundtrack and pew-pew noises...

Google opens Android database at former phone store URL, but only for devices using Google services
Remember when Google opened up its own portal for purchasing the Nexus One? It was January 2010, and the URL was as simple as www.google.com/phone -- ah, those were the days. Of course, the store has been down since late July when the phone sold out (permanently), so what's the company to do with such a catchy web address? Simple: make a database of devices running your über-popular Android OS and help customers both compare and find where to buy. Only, it's not just any devices running the platform: according to the Official Google Mobile blog, "all the phones in the gallery include Android Market, Google Search, and other Google Mobile services such as Gmail, Maps, and YouTube." In other words, no phones that meddle with the Android Vision by opting for Bing or Yahoo instead. Maybe Fascinate can join the ranks after that purported Android 2.2 launch, but for now it's conspicuously absent. Them's the breaks -- still, it's fun to explore and draw up side-by-side comparison charts. Go on, give it a whirl, why don't ya?

HTC Hero a celeb on 'Hawaii Five-0'
The Fall season brings new colors of leaves, the return of children to school, pumpkin pie (om nom nom), and new TV shows. If you've had your boob tube set to CBS in the past few weeks, you've probably seen "Hawaii Five-0" advertised a billion times. What you might of not noticed was the HTC Hero that appeared on the television series first episode. In its brief few minutes of fame, and its short lived life, the Hero was used and then tossed out the window of a moving car. More screens after the break. Thanks, Android Amateur!

Murata Seiko and her male counterpart get upgrades, we get another look at their awesome skills
Murata Seiko, or Murata Girl, is a pretty impressive, attractive little piece of work. The unicycling, dress-wearing robot brings smiles wherever she goes, we're sure (when we had the chance to see her in person that was certainly the case). You may or may not have known that Murata also has a bike riding male counterpart called Little Seisaku? Well, they've both just gotten their upgrades for the year, and that, of course, gives us another opportunity to admire them in all their cuteness. While there aren't any videos of their improvements yet, we know that Murata Girl's now able to traverse an S-shaped balance beam in addition to her straight one, while Little Seisaku's charging capabilities have been upgraded (he can now do so wirelessly), and he's more efficient, too. Check out another shot below.Continue reading Murata Seiko and her male counterpart get upgrades, we get another look at their awesome skillsMurata Seiko and her male counterpart get upgrades, we get another look at their awesome skills originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 12:30:00 EDT. Amazon unveils Kindle for the Web
Filed under: Web
You can already read Kindle books on a whole host of devices besides the Kindle itself -- like your iPhone, Blackbery, Android device, PC, or Mac -- but Amazon's not stopping there. The mammoth ebook seller has unveiled Kindle for the web, an embeddable reader which is capable of displaying book samples right in your browser. In my testing, however, I didn't have much luck -- I tried to embed every "Look Inside" book by George Carlin after the break, but wound up having to use Amazon's example instead.
As Mobiputing's Brad Linder pointed out to me, this could eventually lead to an Amazon Video On Demand-type setup for Kindle: "stream" books to your browser via the viewer, or cache them via HTML5's localstorage element for offline reading. Hey, the Web is the platform, right? Why bother developing dedicated apps for a slew of different devices if you can cleverly code a single Web app which does the job just as well?
Take a look at the embed code in action after the break -- it's a lot like a Google Docs Viewer or Scribd embed. Kindle for the Web currently bears the beta tag, so you might not see it on many Kindle books as you browser Amazon's shelves.

Nintendo announces Wii Remote Plus with built-in MotionPlus tracking
As a follow-up to this morning's announcement, we now have some shots of Nintendo's colorful new Wiimote. Still no extra details, but what we do have is confirmation from Nintendo that they are indeed building the Wii Remote Plus, which combines a Wii Remote with its Wii MotionPlus gyro add-on into one Wii Remote-sized package. We spotted the controller in a FlingSmash bundle last week, the telltale "smile" text below the Wii logo, and now all we really need is a price and a launch date. Hopefully we'll be getting all of these colors when this lands in the US as well, but since this is a Japanese presentation that Nintendo is making this announcement, we can't be too sure.Nintendo announces Wii Remote Plus with built-in MotionPlus tracking originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 16:13:00 EDT. AT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this year
RIM products tend to have ultra-predictable launch cycles -- when Waterloo announces a new BlackBerry, odds are pretty great that your carrier's going to pick it up at some point, no matter what carrier that may be. So it goes with the Curve 3G and Pearl 3G; neither product is new, of course, but they're new to AT&T, which has just revealed that it'll be getting both this year. The Pearl seems like it'll probably be coming first, launching on October 17 for $149.99 on contract (in its 20-key flavor) with no rebate required; the Curve, meanwhile, slips in on a to-be-determined date "in time for the holidays" for $99.99 on contract, also sans rebate. Though no mention is made of upgradeability on the Pearl, the Curve is called out as being BlackBerry 6-ready -- RIM needs carrier buy-in to deploy these upgrades, so the fact that AT&T is saying it is notable. The Pearl's price seems way out of whack, but needless to say, we're sure some of the third-party resellers will be getting 'em out the door for a penny on contract within a few weeks. Follow the break for the press release.Continue reading AT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this yearAT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this year originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 13:27:00 EDT. New Kobo eReader gets wireless connection, faster processor, pretty colors
When we reviewed the $150 Kobo e-reader this summer we liked the value it offered, but didn't particularly appreciate the poor performance nor the missing wireless connectivity. Now it's back, a new version offering fixes to those two issues (the system works!) and selling for $10 cheaper to boot. The new Kobo Wireless eReader adds WiFi into the mix, enabling on-device book downloads whenever you're in range of a suitably accommodating hotspot. There's also a new processor to speed things up, but at this point we don't know by how much. That question will be answered on November 1 when the thing starts shipping in your choice of three colors (black, silver, and lovely lavender), but as it's currently up for pre-order now at Borders you'd better hurry and make with the clicking if you want yours by the holidays.

Chromium OS infiltrates iPad, makes itself comfortable
What is this madness we see before us? Hexxeh, he who provides your nightly Chromium builds, has dropped a small but perfectly formed bombshell by revealing that he's managed to install Google's nascent OS onto Apple's hotcake of a tablet, the iPad. He's evidenced this feat by tweeting from the liberated slate, though one of his outgoing missives includes the dire warning that he'll "dash your hopes later, there are a few catches." Well, at least that gives us a little time to fantasize about Appoogle synergies before those dream-destroying details are revealed in full.

Galaxy Tab Bluetooth Stylus emerges, up for 49.99 pre-order
It's been a month since we caught our first glimpse of the Galaxy Tab's Bluetooth Stylus and today, although still seemingly unofficial, it's appeared in its first pre-order listing. Priced at £49.99 ($79) by UK online specialist Play, this capacitive stylus will facilitate handwriting recognition for those of us not served well enough by the Tab's generally excellent soft keyboard. It's also capable of hooking up to two Bluetooth devices at a time and has the extra intelligence thrown in to receive and reject phone calls -- whether on the Tab or on your phone. It's an intriguing piece of kit, maybe Samsung should go ahead and make it official now, eh?Galaxy Tab Bluetooth Stylus emerges, up for 49.99 pre-order originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 09:35:00 EDT. Beejive for Android now available
Beejive IM is finally out of beta, and is now available on the Android Market. Beejive is a very popular, cross platform multiple service IM client that's safe (128-bit encryption on all over-the-air data), easy to use, and uses Google's new push services (see our Chrome to Phone demo about them) to stay easy on the battery. It also integrates seamlessly with all of the popular chat clients, with group chat support for AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk, and Jabber. Possibly the best feature -- file transfers between users is supported, something many of us have been waiting for. It's good that Beejive is so feature rich, because it's going to cost you $10. That's not really surprising, as Beejive is an expensive app on other platforms as well. What I found most dissapointing, is that while Beejive offers license transfer between BlackBerry devices, I see no method to transfer my license from BlackBerry to my Android device, nor any method to transfer license between Android phones. And it appears that each installation is tied to the device it was purchased from, using a unique device identifier, so Beejive will have to facilitate the transfer. Hopefully all this is an oversight or in the works -- I've reached out to Beejive for some more clarification. But if you've been longing for Beejive, or just need a good (and it's very good, I've been participating in the beta as well) cross platform, multi-client chat application go for it -- you won't be disappointed in anything other than the price and/or licensing scheme. Download link and some more screen shots are after the break.

Panasonic Toughbook S9 claims to be the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a DVD drive, we believe it
Panasonic's Toughbook line hasn't only been impressing in extreme durability lately, but also in extreme weight-loss. Joining the 3.2-pound Tougbook C1, is the newest 12.1-inch Toughbook S9, which weighs just three pounds. And yes, Panny's claiming it's the lightest 12-incher with an optical drive, and our quick research seems to prove that claim right. Even more impressive is the power that's packed into the featherweight chassis -- it's got a Core i5-520M processor, 2GB of RAM, and a shock-mounted 320GB hard drive. Thought that Panasonic gave up the durability for that weightage? You'd be wrong -- the magnesium alloy case can still withstand a 2.5-foot operating drop, meets all the Mil Spec 810-G drop procedures, has a spill-resistant keyboard, and can take more than 220 pounds of pressure on its lid and base. It does sound great for when someone drops it off the airport security belt, but that's until you hear about the physical beating it'll take on your bank account -- it'll retail for $2,499. Yeah, we wish we had better news to end on, but perhaps the press release and pictures below will turn that frown upside down.Gallery: Panasonic Toughbook S9 press shotsContinue reading Panasonic Toughbook S9 claims to be the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a DVD drive, we believe itPanasonic Toughbook S9 claims to be the world's lightest 12.1-inch laptop with a DVD drive, we believe it originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EDT. Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations
Filed under: Google, Browsers
Google will be throwing open the doors to the Chrome Web Store some time in the coming months, and they're currently preparing for a whirlwind global tour to sing the praises of HTML5 and Chrome. On the tour, the Web Store will be a frequent topic of discussion and they've recently announced a couple important additions to the Store's developer preview.
Google Checkout payments are now supported, and developers can sign up for a merchant account on their dashboard page. Page previews have now been added -- so you can see how your app will look in the Store prior to publishing. Pages can be customized with header images and Google is also allowing devs to upload their own promotional banners (they'll be displayed when your app is feature in the store).
One downside for developers hoping to sell their apps in the Web Store is that Google Checkout might be the only payment option. Checkout still isn't available in that many countries, so international devs looking to deliver localized Web apps will have to wait for Google to make good on their expansion promises.
ed note: it's become an expected part of app stores, but as you can see in the screenshot the Chrome Web Store will offer recommendations based on what other users install.Chrome Web Store preview adds Google Checkout payments, recommendations originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. Twitter aware of onMouseOver hack for months, claims 17-year-old who exposed it
Filed under: Internet, Social Software, web 2.0
A 17-year-old schoolboy from Australia has taken the blame for the onMouseOver JavaScript Twitter exploit that caused havoc for a few hours on Wednesday.
Disclaiming innocence, Pearce Delphin -- who has the coolest name in the world -- says that he only discovered the vulnerability. "I did it merely to see if it could be done ... that JavaScript really could be executed within a tweet," he told AFP via email. The self-replicating worm came later, with the Guardian reporting that it was originally crafted by Masato Kinugawa and refined by Magnus Holm. Within hours, many mutations appeared -- shortly after, the Twitter offices in San Francisco groggily awoke, and the exploit was swiftly fixed.
Most importantly, however, Pearce says that Twitter knew about the problem for 'months.' It's not clear whether Pearce is talking authoritatively -- he might simply be stealing someone else's thunder -- but I'm sure Twitter will be quick to respond if he's wrong.
Update: Twitter actually fixed the bug last month, but seemingly made another change recently that brought it back.Twitter aware of onMouseOver hack for months, claims 17-year-old who exposed it originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 10:20:00 EST. HTC Merge for Verizon gets snapped: another Android phone with Bing
We're not sure exactly what Verizon is up to with these high-end Android phones that aren't Droids and feature Bing over Google, but it looks like the Fascinate is about to get a friend: BGR just got these snaps of the HTC ADR6325, which appears to be the Merge we've heard so much about, and the same dual-mode set we saw at the FCC. Nothing's confirmed specs-wise except a five megapixel camera, microSD slot, and SIM slot for global roaming, but we're still pretty sure this thing will basically be the CDMA version of the Desire Z / T-Mobile G2 and feature a Qualcomm MSM7630 processor with 4GB of onboard storage. And then there's that Bing logo on the homescreen -- we don't know how thoroughly it's integrated into Sense, but here's hoping it's better than what Samsung accomplished with TouchWiz on the Fascinate -- hardware this promising shouldn't be saddled with carrier-wrecked firmware.HTC Merge for Verizon gets snapped: another Android phone with Bing originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 17:55:00 EDT. Segway Inc. owner rides over cliff to his death
UK businessman Jimi Heselden, the man who believed in the Segway so much that he went ahead and bought the company, has died after reportedly driving a ruggedized version of the scooter off a cliff and into a river. He was found early on Sunday morning in the River Wharfe, having earlier been touring his estate in the personal transporter. The cause of the accident is not yet known. Mr. Heselden was 62 years old and, true to our geeky hearts, generated his fortune by coming up with an innovative design for wire cage walls that has since become standard equipment for NATO, American, and British forces. Our thoughts are with the good gent's family, and please, behave yourselves in comments.

Kno single-screen tablet textbook hands-on: all the power in half the size
If you've been following tech news today, you'll know two tablets are coming down the pike -- RIM's BlackBerry Playbook, and a single-screen version of the Kno textbook tablet from the artist formerly known as Kakai. Running across San Francisco to a Kno meet-up, we got to see the new unit for ourselves, and discovered this interesting little tidbit: it's got all the same hardware inside. How? RIM announces WebWorks development kit, in-app payments, ad platform, and BBM API
RIM's BlackBerry Developer Conference is going down this week in San Francisco, and as you might expect from a developer-focused event, there are a handful of newsy items that'll affect the development community first and consumers down the road. Here's a roundup of what's what:
WebWorks development platform. From what we've heard of this so far, it's basically a quick way for web devs to get into the BlackBerry app game by offering a tightly-integrated platform for HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript code with hooks to native BlackBerry OS functions and a packager for turning them into "real" BlackBerry apps.
BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform. RIM's historically held BBM very, very close to the chest, but it's starting to open up a tad with this particular announce. Don't look for BBM on other platforms (yes, we know that's what some of you were hoping to hear), but third-party app developers will now be able to tap into the system for sending and receiving messages, files, user profiles, and invitations. Interestingly, the company is pitching it as a platform for multiplayer gaming, using BBM as a conduit to move information between devices in real time.
BlackBerry Advertising Service. Google bought AdMob and Apple bought Quattro, but RIM's taking a more democratic approach to its advertising platform, allowing both "simple" and "rich media" ads to be served from a handful of providers "with only three lines of code." It'll be a 60 / 40 revenue split between devs and RIM.
BlackBerry Payment Service SDK. This one's launching in beta this week, bringing third-party in-app payments over credit card, PayPal, and carrier billing (available on AT&T right now, more carriers by the end of the year). It'll be out of beta before 2010's out.
Nothing on the so-called BlackPad so far, but at any rate, seems like this roundup is great news for anyone looking to slide some content into App World over the next few months.RIM announces WebWorks development kit, in-app payments, ad platform, and BBM API originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 16:25:00 EDT. elRTE is a comprehensive, free rich text editor for the Web
Filed under: Developer, Utilities, Web
Formatting text for the Web is an ongoing quest. HTML has a fairly steep learning curve, but people still need to blog, comment, and somehow format text.
Personally, I'm a huge Markdown fan. In my opinion, if you're trying to write a blog post with formatting that can't be expressed in Markdown you're putting too much emphasis on the formatting.
Still, not everyone likes Markdown, and sometimes circumstances call for a rich, visual content editing control. There are a ton of such controls floating around (with CKEditor being the best-known one), but elRTE seems like a worthy contender.
One of the things I like about it is that you get a bottom bar that shows you exactly where you are in the document hierarchy (i.e., "div > table > tbody > tr > td"). Also, all of the dialogs (for adding tables, images, etc.) are comprehensive, and each provides a ton of options.
Again, I don't think it's a control that I would personally use, because it's huge (some might even say "bloated"). But if some of your users require a visual editor, while others require fine-grained control over the HTML that they create, elRTE might provide a reasonable compromise.elRTE is a comprehensive, free rich text editor for the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 13:00:00 EST. Word Domination helps you become a crossword puzzle monster
Filed under: Fun, Education
Quick, I need an eight-letter word that starts with B, and letter six is R! Any ideas?
If questions like this make you draw a blank, Word Domination can come in very handy the next time you're struggling with those last few words of a crossword puzzle. It gave me 97 different results for this particular query, including "bescorch" and "bevatron."
I wasn't really sure what a bevatron was, so I clicked the word. Word Domination then transported me to the bevatron word page, where I discovered that it's a historic particle accelerator. Now I feel a bit less ignorant, because it's more of a proper noun that "just a word." But I guess that, somewhere in the world, a sadistic crossword puzzle author might call for "historic particle accelerator, six letters, horizontal."
Word Domination comes up with more ordinary words, too. The list is sorted alphabetically - not by frequency. The whole site feels very clean, modern, and fun to use. There's a "simple mode," too, which supports the asterisk wildcard (like b*tron) and doesn't make you specify the number of letters that the results should contain.
Their "About Us" page is empty, so I can't tell you who's behind the site, but as long as it works, it works!Word Domination helps you become a crossword puzzle monster originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 11:20:00 EST. Nielsen: growth of digital music sales flat in 2010
It's a bit early for the big music companies to start panicking, but it looks like the heyday of double-digit growth in digital music sales may now be behind us. That's according to market research firm Nielsen, at least, which found that sales in the US fell flat in 2010 after a 13 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, and a whopping 28 percent jump from 2007 to 2008. Nielsen is quick to point out, however, that it thinks this is a "plateau," and that it "doesn't mean that this digital consumption is going to drop significantly." It also still seems to be a different story outside of the US, with Nielsen reporting that digital music sales were up up 7 percent in Britain, 13 percent in Germany and 19 percent in France.

Samsung Galaxy Tab as Home Watcher remote control (video)
Seems like only yesterday that we were begging a big named consumer electronics company to get into home automation. Now Samsung, the world's biggest consumer electronics company, complies with a demonstration of the connected home of the future using its own Galaxy Tab. The demo depicts live widget-based control over your home's HVAC, TV (including remote viewing), stove, oven, dryer, vacuum robot, and refrigerator with integrated grocery manager that suggests recipes based upon the food you have. Unfortunately, instead of offering details on when (or how) Samsung's vision might become reality, the demo's main intent seems to be showing off Samsung's latest product line from IFA earlier this month. It's still worth a trip beyond the break for a peek though.Samsung Galaxy Tab as Home Watcher remote control (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 06:58:00 EDT. Ping finally gets proper iTunes integration
Filed under: Audio, Apple
Call me crazy, but if you're going to integrate a new social network into your desktop media library app, it might be a good idea for users to be able to share the items in their library from the get-go. That wasn't the case with Ping, however.
When it launched, songs could only be shared from the iTunes Store -- and who wants to dig around in the Store to find a song which is already in their local library just to share it on Ping? Not me, that's for sure.
With the latest update to iTunes, however, Ping is actually integrated with iTunes. As you play songs or search through your library, you can now click and post to Ping. It's much simpler, more logical, and the way Ping should have worked in iTunes from the get-go. There's also a sidebar which displays relevant information from across Ping about the artist you've selected.
I'm still not going to use Ping, but I'm glad to see Apple moved quickly to fix what was a fairly silly gap in functionality.Ping finally gets proper iTunes integration originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 27 Sep 2010 09:00:00 EST. Ping Now Works With Your Actual iTunes Library. This Is A Thousand Times Better
It launched with much fanfare, but I don't think it was unreasonable to call Ping a dud out of the gate. While pretty much everyone initially signed up to try it out, a few days later, the activity stream seemed to trickle to almost nothing. And there was a good reason for that: Apple's social network for music made it very hard to share stuff -- you know, be social. But an update today makes it at least a thousand times better.
iTunes 10.0.1 released this morning brings some big Ping updates with it. Most notably, you can now use Ping with your own iTunes library. Previously, you could only share songs on Ping through the iTunes Store -- a big difference. This basically meant that even if you already owned a song, you had to hunt it down in the iTunes Store to share it. This was almost laughably tedious, and it ensured that no one would use Ping for more than a couple days.Interdigital Communications Intel Insight Enterprises Ingram Micro

Firefox finally gets "paste and go" in FF4 nightly
Filed under: Mozilla, Browsers
Other browsers like Chrome and Opera can do it, and they've been doing it for ages. There are add-ons that let Firefox do it, but if it's such a useful feature, why hasn't it been included out-of-the-box?
"It" is paste and go, and like sync functionality, it has finally been permanently bolted on to Firefox. In recent nightly builds of Firefox 4, you can right-click to paste a URL and go to it without pressing enter -- or paste and go to search any copied text. To be fair, you could already right-click highlighted text and choose to search with your default engine in Firefox, but the absence of paste and go has often made me wonder "why?"
It's yet another feature addition to Firefox 4, which is racking up quite a lengthy list during its beta phase. As always, you can download the latest nightly build of Firefox 4 from Mozilla or check for updates in Minefield's about screen.

Samsung promised to bring 10-inch Galaxy Tablet in first half of 2011
As we have seen recently, the Samsung Galaxy Tablet has been quite a popular piece of technology as it prepares for its launch across all four major U.S. carriers. While many were left wondering why there was only a 7-inch version available and not a choice of sizes, it seems as though our question was quickly answered. A General Manager from Ireland has confirmed that they are in the works of a 10-inch version to match their current tablet and are hoping for a release in the first half of 2011. Part of this delay could be that Samsung is waiting for the release of either Gingerbread or Honeycomb, which should be displayed better on a tablet form factor, since we know Android 2.2 was not made for that. Apple, Adobe, Google, Intel Intuit and Pixar: now free to cold call each other's employees
Attaboy, DoJ! Out of (almost) nowhere, the United States Department of Justice announced today that it was requiring six well-known technology outfits to stop entering into "anticompetitive employee solicitation agreements," and we're guessing you will have heard just a few of these names: Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit and Pixar. As the story goes, these six companies were all mixed up (but not all together, mind you) in agreements that forbid each other from cold calling employees from a rival firm in order to offer them a different job.
According to the DoJ, those arrangements acted as a "significant form of competition to attract highly skilled employees," and it has now filed a civil antitrust complaint today along with a proposed settlement that, "if approved by the court, would resolve the lawsuit." We're also told that some of the agreements were put into place as early as 2005, and they were "formed and actively managed by senior executives of these companies." Yikes. Hit the source link for the full report, and feel free to call back that "Unknown" caller that keeps hitting you up on your Adobe line -- it's probably Pixar with a seven-figure offer.Apple, Adobe, Google, Intel Intuit and Pixar: now free to cold call each other's employees originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 22:37:00 EDT. Minox PX3D concept camera eyes-on at Photokina 2010
It took us a solid nine minutes of gawking at Minox's gilded DCC 5.1 in order to push through and locate the PX3D that premiered here at Photokina, but sadly, little was available other than the opportunity to snag a few glamor shots. The general idea is that this cutesy pocket camera will one day hit the market and capture 3D images that can then be viewed on-screen without 3D glasses. We're still under the impression that a parallax barrier panel will be required in order to witness the magic, but it's all still a mystery for now. It's still the most curious looking 3D camera that we've seen to date, so you can bet we'll be keeping you in the loop as this thing slowly crawls from prototype to profit maker. Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 actually doesn't support tethering
We're not exactly sure how this message got so confused, but Microsoft's come out today to let us know that Windows Phone 7 officially doesn't support tethering at all, despite earlier comments by Brandon Watson that it'd be a network operator call on whether to enable it. If we had to guess, this is probably a feature that was "on the bubble" as Microsoft moved toward RTM, and it simply didn't make the cut for version 1.0 -- we'd definitely expect to see it in a future release, though there's no guidance from Microsoft at the moment on whether (or when) that'll happen.Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 actually doesn't support tethering originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 13:12:00 EDT. Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative
Filed under: Business, Adobe
There are all sorts of compelling reasons to try an alternative PDF reader, security not being the least. Adobe Reader is also quite stingy with its functionality - you can't even annotate PDFs.
Nitro PDF Reader is an alternative reader with a modern-looking interface, and it offers generous annotation options. Unlike Foxit Reader, Nitro doesn't appear to watermark your PDF when you annotate it. You can highlight sections of the document, add text, add sticky-notes, and stamp your signature (not a digital signature - just a scanned one).
If you're lucky, you may also be able to extract graphics and text from your PDF. Ironically, I was unable to extract the images from Nitro's own sample PDF (the Welcome file that comes with the reader). Another thing you should know is that it's quite a memory hog. I tried the same document with both Foxit and Nitro; Foxit clocked in at 8MB, while Nitro consumed a whopping 63MB. Again, this is for the same exact one-page document. This is even more than Acrobat Reader 9.3, which consumed 50MB for that same document.
Still, if you've got a little RAM to spare (and most of us do), I think Nitro is a worthy contender, if only for its annotation capabilities and simple interface.Nitro PDF Reader is a powerful, free Adobe Reader alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. T-Mobile G2 pre-orders go live for current customers, available to all on October 6
Just as promised, T-Mobile has started offering its subscribers that "exclusive access" to early G2 pre-orders. There have been a couple of early hiccups with the pre-order page for that select group, but they're being ironed out as we type and there's also word that the rest of us unwashed Android geeks will be able to join in on October 6. One of our tipsters forwarded along a bill for his purchase showing the phone to be valued at $249.99 and an estimated delivery date of September 30. That's quite the steep entry fee, considering Best Buy will have the phone on October 6 as well for just under $200 and Radio Shack is undercutting all with a $150 price on the typical two-year contract.
[Thanks, Justin and Wei]
Update: Our tipster's $250 levy is before the standard $50 mail-in rebate, making for the predictable $200 price when all's said and done.Continue reading T-Mobile G2 pre-orders go live for current customers, available to all on October 6T-Mobile G2 pre-orders go live for current customers, available to all on October 6 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 02:41:00 EDT. Confirmed: EVO 4G update removes framerate cap
You hoped, you opined, you might have even prayed -- and as it turns out, you win. As many of you have suspected, the latest firmware update to Sprint / HTC's EVO 4G does, in fact, let us break past the former 30 frames per second barrier. You know, the one HTC said couldn't be crossed with software updates alone. At least, it did for our handheld, as you can see above. Good news for everyone bothered by this (now seemingly) artificial limit -- now back to your regularly-scheduled WiMAX enjoyment.Confirmed: EVO 4G update removes framerate cap originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 14:02:00 EDT. Robots 'to beat world's best' human footballers by 2050 and other things said when high
We're as hopeful about the future as anyone. Sure, we fear robots, but we're bound to have at least a few years of peaceful co-existence before they grow weary of our human insolence and irrational buffoonery. Claude Sammut, professor of computer science at New South Wales University in Australia (and RoboCup regular), believes that robots will surpass the abilities of professional human footballers (aka, soccer players) by 2050. For this to happen, he says that the field will require "major advances in perception, decision making, learning, and co-operative behaviours." Of course, looking at the current field of RoboCup contestants or even around the house at the TV (largely unchanged since 1930), telephone (patented in 1876), and iPod (now 9 years old), it's hard to imagine technology advancing that fast. That is, until the rate of technological change accelerates so fast that we achieve singularity sometime in 2030 or 2050, depending upon who you ask.Robots 'to beat world's best' human footballers by 2050 and other things said when high originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 06:42:00 EDT. MacBook Air suffers another bout of 11.6-inch display rumors
You know a device is due for a refresh when the only thing left to write about it is rumormongering of a possible upgrade. Today it's the turn of Apple Insider, citing sources in Taiwan, to declare that an 11.6-inch LED-backlit display will be headlining a long overdue update to Apple's MacBook Air. We've heard this scuttlebutt before, and the idea that the Air would be shrunken in order to better differentiate it from the MacBook Pro line carries a lot of believability, but we're still a little jaded from previous misleading rumors on the same subject. At least this one comes with all the gravitas of DigiTimes, whose scribes suggest Quanta has an order to build up to half a million 11.6-inch "MacBooks" for Apple in 2010. All that said, we still wouldn't be surprised if Apple let another holiday period go by without updating its unhealthily thin 13.3-inch laptop.MacBook Air suffers another bout of 11.6-inch display rumors originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:40:00 EDT. Epson rolls out new 3LCD projectors for budgets big and medium
Since it's CEDIA time, Epson has seen fit to unveil several new 1080p projectors, ranging from price brackets in the (reasonable for this crowd) sub-$7,000 category with the new Pro Cinema 6100 to the Home Cinema 8350 which comes in at less than $1,300. The Pro Cinema 6100 (above) debuts the company's new 3LCD Reflective and UltraBlack tech courtesy of a dual-layered auto iris that is its first to reach dynamic contrast ratios of up to 1,000,000:1, while the Pro Cinema 31000 and Home Cinema 21000 beamers feature similar lens technology with appropriately lower-end chipsets, stats and prices when all of them ship in December. The next jump down is the Home Cinema 8350 and 8700UB models that eschew the new HDMI 1.4 ports and more exotic lens technology of the higher end models while still bringing improved specs over last year's lineup to retailer shelves when they ship later this month. Detailed specs follow after the break if you're wondering just how far an extra dollar or two will go.Continue reading Epson rolls out new 3LCD projectors for budgets big and mediumEpson rolls out new 3LCD projectors for budgets big and medium originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 18:48:00 EDT.

Sony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chops
Here's a lesson in actual vs. theoretical. Sony Optiarc America has announced the new BDX-S500U external USB 2.0 Blu-ray drive capable of burning single-layer BD-R discs at smoking speeds of 6x or dual-layer discs at up to 4x. If you do the math, those specs imply transfer speeds of 27Mbps for single-sided 25GB discs and total burn times of roughly 20 minutes. That's great news for folks with PCs looking to use the high-storage medium or watch 3D Blu-rays -- except for one tiny hitch. See, USB 2.0's theoretical maximum transfer speed is 60MBps, but in the real world most are lucky to get even half that rate. According to tests by Techworld, those with certain USB 3.0 chipsets can even experience USB 2.0 rates as low as 11MBps. In that light, the BDX-S500U's impressive speeds -- just like Paul Walker -- may be too fast and too furious for its computer counterparts to keep up, making it a different kind of bag of hurt for buyers. While no official pricing has been offered the drive will go on sale later this month and online retailers are already listing prices in the range of $214 to $240. For full specs and details, check out the PR after the break.Continue reading Sony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chopsSony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 15:06:00 EDT. Ron Conway Drops A Nuclear Bomb On The Super Angels [Email]
As we just stated in our previous post, there was clearly an email sent by angel investor Ron Conway to a group of super angels who were likely involved in the Bin 38 "AngelGate" meeting that Mike stumbled into a couple days ago. We've now received a copy of the email that Conway sent from an anonymous tipster. And we've confirmed it is authentic from one of therecipients.

Check Out the Upcoming Lord of the Rings Tower Defense iPhone Game [Video]
What'd I learn from my hands-on with Lord of the Rings: Middle Earth Defense, a forthcoming LOTR tower defense game? That Aragorn's just as much of a badass when he's small enough to fit it the palm of your hand. More »

BlackBerry 9570 is definitely a refreshed Storm2, but is it called the Storm3?
RIM, come on, guys, you're killing us here! We don't know exactly what the story is yet, but there's a BlackBerry in the wild now with model number 9570 -- and it looks exactly like the existing Storm2, which lines up nicely with BGR's insistence earlier this week that the Storm3 is very much a warmed-over Storm2 with BlackBerry 6 and some minor spec bumps. In terms of strategy, we guess this would line up with the Bold 9780 we've been seeing around the block, which looks almost exactly like a Bold 9700 -- but in terms of customers understanding that this is a new product, it looks like a recipe for disaster. Of course, this might not be known as the Storm3 when (and if) it's released -- they might stick with the Storm2 or call it something like Storm2 Plus or Storm2.5 -- which might make more sense since we still don't know what that other spy shot of a completely different device is. Sure, we have no doubt that a few people would be interested in a refreshed Storm2, but would it be enough to justify the R&D and marketing costs?BlackBerry 9570 is definitely a refreshed Storm2, but is it called the Storm3? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 12:56:00 EDT. Wolfram Alpha now processing U.S. retail sales data
Filed under: Search, web 2.0, Education
When I was a kid and used to fantasize about what the future was going to be like, I didn't envision a Google-like search engine. If anything, I thought the future would hold something more along the lines of Wolfram Alpha - an omniscient search box that would slice and dice numbers and facts in all sorts of crazy ways and spit out a bunch of cool graphs.
And now, Wolfram Alpha has added one more key data source to its growing arsenal: U.S. Department of Commerce reports about retail sales in the States.
This is significant, because there's so much hype about "the economy" and how it's all crashing and burning -- or how it isn't. And really, the best antidote for hype is data. With Wolfram Alpha making this data so compelling and accessible, there's really no reason not to find out for yourself how the U.S. economy is doing. It's also smart enough to seasonally adjust the data in order to compensate for spikes and drops that are due to purchasing habits typical to that time of year rather than actual market anomalies.
Some of the queries you can chart:
Seasonally adjusted retail sales jewelry stores vs U.S. unemployment (Their idea, not mine)
Seasonally adjusted retail sales vs US military spending - This one doesn't give you a graph, but is still quite interesting.
April 2010 retail sales computers vs April 2010 retail sales - To see how large the computing industry's direct role is in U.S. economy.
Bottom line: Wolfram Alpha keeps adding more and more data sources - we just need to figure out how to use them.Wolfram Alpha now processing U.S. retail sales data originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 17:15:00 EST.
