No, sadly it's not my video (whose accent do you prefer, incidentally? The squeaky American, or mine?) but still, it's a great early look at the browsing experience on Windows Phone 7.
Lee really likes the tabs (those close buttons look fiddly though). I like the Metro UI, and the ability to add favourite pages to the Start screen. Froyo looks like a crusty donkey in comparison -- and iOS4 even manages to look a bit bland. I never thought I'd see a Microsoft product on the bleeding edge of user interface design...
Microsoft's new mobile OS is all but finished now, incidentally. The final release of its developer tools comes on September 16th (one day after the IE9 beta!), and handsets should be out in the wild by October. Did you see the list of games that will be available at launch? Commence salivation.

OhLife helps you maintain a personal diary over e-mail
Filed under: Utilities, Productivity
Dear diary,
Today I found OhLife. It's an interesting service for maintaining a private journal. It aims to do the same thing Penzu does, but offers a different take on things to help people journal more consistently: Writing is done over email.
Once you sign up, you get a nightly email, asking how did your day go. You simply reply and jot down whatever it is you have to say about the day. OhLife receives your email and files today's entry into your private archive.
This is not very different from setting up a daily reminder and using a Gmail label as a journal. But what's nice about OhLife is that it includes a random "blast from the past" with every email you receive. Meaning, you get prompted to write what's new today, but you also see a random entry from some time in the past, and so are instantly reminded of the value of maintaining a diary. After all, today's routine becomes tomorrow's memory.
I think this is a brilliant way to maintain a personal diary. It's simple, it's free, and you don't even have to log on to the site to write.
The site itself is a study in simplicity. Beautiful design, bold text, and an overall welcoming vibe. If I ever want to maintain a journal, this will certainly be one candidate.

Xbox 360 to get fresh controller, better D-pad in time for the holidays?
Microsoft seems to have caught the hardware tinkering bug. Having overhauled its Xbox 360 design, the software giant is now said to be keeping busy in the lab working on the console's controller. Such is the word coming from our buddies over at Joystiq, whose reliable source indicates that Redmond will soon produce a new 360 controller with a redesigned D-pad. As the story goes, when you rotate the directional pad ninety degrees, it'll rise up by about a quarter of an inch, making it more accessible for those that still care to use it (e.g. fighting game fans). No details on what sort of bundled or standalone retail fate this little guy may have, but the holidays are its unsurprising destination. We just hope the Bond-esque mechanism comes with an appropriately futuristic swooshing sound.Xbox 360 to get fresh controller, better D-pad in time for the holidays? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 09:01:00 EDT. Samsung Galaxy Tab accessories may include Bluetooth stylus and USB adapter
That weekend leak of Galaxy Tab accessories was apparently not done flowing. The same source is today dishing the dirt on a pair of highly intriguing extra bits for Samsung's upcoming tablet. Firstly, the Bluetooth pen acts both as a stylus for the Galaxy Tab and a sort of wireless remote control. It's compatible with other devices, meaning it can be used to control voice calls you receive on your cellphone. The second tidbit is no less thrilling: a USB adapter that promises to turn the Tab's dock connector into a standard-issue USB port. You don't need us to explain how handy a trinket that could be for the multimedia maven on the move. It's worth pointing out, however, that both these accessory leaks show what looks like an earlier hardware prototype of the Galaxy Tab, so we may be looking at slightly dated information. All such uncertainty and questions should be resolved come September 2.Samsung Galaxy Tab accessories may include Bluetooth stylus and USB adapter originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 09:49:00 EDT. WordPress.com can now tap Zemanta's magic photoifying, taggy and related linky juice
Filed under: Blogging, Productivity
Despite being posted by someone with a thoroughly unbelievable name ('Joy Victory'? Really?), I can confirm that WordPress.com users now have access to Zemanta's rather sexy functionality.
Zemanta, if you've not heard of it before, is best explained as a blogging buddy. It doesn't write your blogs for you, but it can help your posts along. As you write your posts (and update your title), Zemanta generates related links (from the Interwebs), images and suggested tags. Take a look at the screenshot above -- it shows most of the main features.
From a cynical point of view, Zemanta basically makes your blog more search engine friendly. It's an SEO tool! But, for me, just the ability to easily add images (the images are free of copyright!) is a boon of monumental proportions.
WordPress.com users can enable Zemanta from their Personal Settings (via the Dashboard). WordPress.org users (i.e. self-hosted installations), there's a Zemanta plug-in that provides the same functionality.WordPress.com can now tap Zemanta's magic photoifying, taggy and related linky juice originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. Miranda IM 0.9 is now out -- new icons, better Win7 support, and lots more!
Miranda IM is pretty much the most versatile, customizable, powerful, minimalistic and down-right sexy IM client on the planet.
I know that sounds like a lot, but I've been using it for years, and I've tried pretty much everything else Windows and Linux have to offer. I never tried Adium, so maybe Adium's better - but for Windows, nothing beats Miranda. As you can tell, this application is a prime candidate for one of my What the Zuk columns, so I will save the rest of my admiration for later and get to the news already:
Miranda 0.9.0 is now out! Miranda is very actively developed, but the release cycle isn't exactly lightning-fast. So 0.9.0 means something, and here's a few features off the list:
New improved protocols engine with full Unicode support
New high quality icon theme
First official x64 version
Added Windows 7 taskbar icon support
The weirdest feature added to this release was support for file transfers of over 4GB in size. I mean, who the heck transfers over 4GB of files over IM? This release also brings strong Unicode support across the board, so if you happen to be a non-English user this may come in handy. I just installed it myself, and the myriad of add-ons I use seem to work just fine.
And of course, Miranda keeps all of its existing goodness, including support for an insane number of protocols. I currently use it for IRC, ICQ, MSN, GChat, and Olark. One client to rule them all! If you've never used Miranda, now would be a great time to give it a spin!Miranda IM 0.9 is now out -- new icons, better Win7 support, and lots more! originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Samsung Galaxy Tab Almost Certainly Confirmed For Verizon [Galaxy Tab]

Google Chrome dev channel hits v7 -- get ready for native code in Web apps!
Those of you who have been waiting patiently to see what Google's Native Client is all about shouldn't have to wonder much longer. With yesterday's bump to version 7, Google Chrome dev now comes with the NaCl plug-in enabled by default -- and as we've seen countless times before, once a feature is turned on it doesn't take long for Chrome developers to pounce on it.
So, what is Native Client all about? It's Google open source tech which allows native code (the kind of code which powers your favorite desktop apps) to run inside your browser. Assuming that browser is Google Chrome, of course, because no one else sports NaCl support yet. Native code in the browser should mean the arrival of Web apps that truly compete with desktop apps in terms of performance -- which could be a big boost to things like online media converters and photo editors. At the very least, you'll be able to play Quake in Chrome.
If you want to see Native Client in action, Google has a gallery of NaCl demo ports you can check out -- or at least you're meant to be able to check them out. Both Chrome dev and Canary responded with a "missing plug-in" message when i tried to load them, even though Native Client was enabled (as you can see in my screenshot).
The dev channel update was actually quite a major one, though it mostly contained bugfixes and cleaned up code. The full log of revisions is available here.
update: as reported in the comments, you need to add the --enable-nacl flag to your shortcut. I've done that, and the demos still don't load, however. The missing plug-in message did disappear at least...

Mysterious Verizon-bound HTC handset appears mysteriously on the internet
Hey -- what's this? Well, from the looks of it, it's a new, as-yet-unnamed HTC device. There is perilously little info available about the mystery mobile, but it appears to boast an 8 megapixel camera with a flash plus a front-facing camera, a 4.3-inch screen, a headphone jack and a kickstand. It also appears that it's going to boast HTC's own Sense UI. This falls in line with what we've heard about Verizon's Android-heavy fall launch this year, so we would not be surprised to see this device make an appearance. Furthermore, we could go out on a limb and guess that it's possible this is the Merge mentioned in that lineup, which supposedly boasts a 1GHz processor. That's all there is to the story right now but we're going to stay up late tonight to be on the lookout for further information on this one. One more photo below and hit up the source for the rest.Continue reading Mysterious Verizon-bound HTC handset appears mysteriously on the internetMysterious Verizon-bound HTC handset appears mysteriously on the internet originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 17:15:00 EDT. Samsung Galaxy Tab to have HDMI dock, leather case, and other sideshow trinkets
We're starting to think Samsung has given up the pretense of keeping the Galaxy Tab's details secret and is letting them all out now. Accessories for its upcoming 7-inch Android tablet have been spotted on one of Sammy's many online portals, complete with pricing. The headline act here will be that "table charging station" on the top left, which happens to have a neat set of HDMI and audio output ports, making the Tab a quirky but viable choice for pumping movies into your HDTV. It's said to be priced at €54 ($69), which we might consider expensive if it wasn't for the keyboard peripheral costing €82 ($105). The relative bargain of the set is the leather case that doubles as a stand, asking for only €41 ($52).Samsung Galaxy Tab to have HDMI dock, leather case, and other sideshow trinkets originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 29 Aug 2010 03:48:00 EDT. HP's Phil McKinney teases three mystery prototypes on Twitter
Well, this is certainly interesting -- that's HP CTO Phil McKinney pictured above in a pair of redacted shots that were posted to Twitter by HP's Mark Budgell. Described only as "early protos" by McKinney himself, the pictures show what appears to be phone-sized device, a tablet-sized device and, perhaps most curiously, something on McKinney's wrist (all mysteriously blacked out). Before you get your hopes up too much about a new wave of webOS devices, however, you might want to take a look at the second part of Budgell's tweet, which encourages folks to vote for McKinney's SXSW 2011 panel -- a panel in which McKinney promises to make some "bold predictions for the future - backed up with a number of breakthrough prototypes," and specifically talk about what the future will look like in "5 to 10 years." Now, we can't be certain of course, but that doesn't exactly suggest these are right around the corner. Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) goes alpha for Android and Nokia N900
Well, it looks like you can finally get rid of that less-than-stable pre-alpha release of Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) for Android -- Mozillla has just released the full alpha release for not only Android (2.0 and later), but the Nokia N900 as well. The big news with this release is an increase in "performance and responsiveness to user actions" (always a good thing), as well as two new features dubbed "Electrolysis" and "Layers," the former of which lets the browser interface run in a separate process from the one rendering web content, while the latter promises to "greatly improve performance in graphic intensive actions like scrolling, zooming, animations and video." You'll also get full support for add-ons, and Firefox Sync built into the browser to let you have a continuous experience as you move between devices. Hit up the link below for the download link, and for a quick video overview of what's in store.Fennec (a.k.a. Nature Sounds is an awesome ambient noise generator
Filed under: Utilities, Productivity
Usually, when I need to focus in a distracting environment I just put on my earbuds and head over to SimplyNoise. But SimplyNoise is a bit too simple at times; it just generates a "wall" of white, brown, or pink noise. It can oscillate the volume a little bit, but that's just about it. That's not a flaw - it's how SimplyNoise was designed.
But what if I want some atmosphere to go with my custom noise? What if I want it to have a certain "vibe," or I want it to inspire me? Plus, some people simply dislike the monotony of a noise generator.
Introducing Nature Sounds. This beautifully simple Flash tool provides you with four audio channels. You populate each channel with a looping sample that you can choose from a vast palette. You've got sounds of whales, the beach, fire crackling, crickets, a heartbeat, drums thumping in the distance, etc. The palette is extensive.
You populate each of the channels with the sample of your choice, and then you can set the volume and the stereo balance (left/right). You can also have the volume oscillate; the continuous bar that you see at the bottom of each channel shows that, for my soundscape, I wanted all sounds to simply continue. There are four different patterns that you can select for each channel, or you can have the sound periodically fade out and start up again.
By adding and removing samples and tweaking the various settings, you can come up with a complete soundscape that really conveys a certain "feel." Once you're done, you can download your creation or save it under its own URL. Then, just access that URL whenever you want to listen to it again (or send it to friends). Windows Live Sync dies, zombie Live Mesh is reborn
Filed under: Utilities, Windows
When Microsoft revealed the first beta version of Windows Live Essentials, a number of Live Mesh users were a little miffed. In addition to dropping the name, Microsoft dialed back the free storage space from 5GB to 2GB.
Today, however, they've announced that they're going to take a mulligan and un-re-name Live Sync. It's going to be called Live Mesh after all, and more importantly you're also going to get that extra 3GB of space back.
Mesh probably makes more sense anyway, what with Sync including the desktop remote functionality. But hey, who gives a rat's patoot about the name when you can now cram in more than double the digital crud? Who knows, maybe some day they'll open the floodgates and let us have Mesh access to the whole 25GB SkyDrive theoretically offers...Windows Live Sync dies, zombie Live Mesh is reborn originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 16:15:00 EST. Former Playdom Employee Sentenced To Jail Time In Zynga Lawsuit
Last fall Zynga sued rival gaming developer Playdom (recently acquired by Disney) for an array of issues including misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of contract, and breach of the duty of loyalty.
In short Zynga accused Playdom of stealing its confidential 'Zynga Playbook'.
The case continues, but the drama has reached its peak. The court today held one former Zynga and Playdom employee, Raymond Holmes, in contempt and sentenced him to ten days in county jail and a $4,000 fine. Fortunately for Holmes, Judge Mark Pierce then suspended the sentence. That means Holmes won't do the time unless he continues to, well, piss off Judge Pierce. SecondMarket And StockTwits Team Up To Let You Tweet About Private Company Stock
StockTwits has built a business out of people tweeting their thoughts and actions around various public stocks. SecondMarket has built a business out of people interested in the buying and selling of various private stocks. It seems only natural to shove the two together. Which is exactly what they're doing today with a new partnership.
As you may be aware, to send a tweet to StockTwits, you have to append the "$SYMBOL" syntax to your tweet. The same idea will now work with these private stocks that SecondMarket tracks. For example, if you're interested in TechCrunch stock, you'd tweet your thoughts with "$TCRH" appended on to the tweet. For Facebook, you'd use "$FBOOK". For Twitter, "$TWIT". And so on.Mcafee Maximus Mantech International Manhattan Associates

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 for AT&T review
We've already published a pretty exhaustive review of Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 some five months ago, but it's taken until this month for it to reach AT&T's network and retail chain. A lot's changed in the mobile phone market since then -- the iPhone 4, the EVO 4G, Dell Streak, numerous Verizon Droids, and so on. Does the X10 still compete? Lawsuit Says Teens Should Not Be Allowed To Like Ads On Facebook
Some people don't like ads. But a new class action lawsuit in California against Facebook (embedded below) thinks it should be illegal for teenagers to like any ads without first obtaining parental consent.
We've written before about the legal implications of using the likeness of Facebook members in advertising, but this time it is not a joke. And the issue is Facebook's "Like" button, not using the likeness of a person to plug a product. On Facebook, you can "like" any status update or post in your stream, but you can also "like" ads. When you do so, it can appear as a status update to all your friends if that ad is linked to a Facebook page, thus turning the "like" button into a social endorsement. (If it is not linked to a page, liking an ad is simply used by Facebook to help them determine the quality of an ad, and it will not appear in your stream).Accenture Acer Adobe Systems Advanced Semiconductor Engineering

MIT Seaswarm autonomous robots coming soon to an oil spill near you (video)
Think of it as an autonomous, swarming, photovoltaic legion of seagoing Roombas (or don't, if you're easily upset). The Seaswarm project at MIT takes a thin, hydrophobic material and drags it behind a robot outfitted with GPS and WiFi for determining its location and communicating within a swarm. When deployed, the group finds the outer edges of an oil spill, and works its way into the center, coordinating the cleanup with minimal human interference. The material itself can take on twenty times its weight in oil. And yes, the whole thing is re-usable. According to researchers, 5,000 of these relatively low cost devices could have cleaned up the BP oil disaster in a month -- which is more than we can say for Kevin Costner! See it in action after the break.Continue reading MIT Seaswarm autonomous robots coming soon to an oil spill near you (video)MIT Seaswarm autonomous robots coming soon to an oil spill near you (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 08:38:00 EDT. Verizon confirms Android 2.2 update for Droid Incredible hits today
Just as we thought, HTC's Droid Incredible for Verizon is getting boosted from Android 2.1 to 2.2 today, which should make plenty of owners (and plenty of non-owners who've been unable to find any stock for the past couple months) happy as a clam. Major features include pre-installed Flash 10.1, 720p video recording, mobile hotspot support as first introduced for Verizon on the Droid X, and naturally, all the other standard greatness you've come to expect with Froyo. We imagine this update will take a couple weeks to roll out to everyone, so show some patience, Droid Incredible owners -- or, you know, do like we do and search frantically for an update.zip to get posted somewhere.

Samsung 90 and 30 series LCDs work hard as computer monitors, play hard as 1080p HDTVs
The dividing line between computer monitor and HDTV grows ever thinner. Samsung is announcing two new series of multi-function monitors, displays that handle the computing you need with sizes ranging from 21.5- to 24-inches, 1920 x 1080 worth of pixels, and a response time of 5ms. But, they also handle the entertainment you want, with HDTV tuners, built-in speakers, and even remote controls. The $420, 24-inch 90 Series offers LED-backlighting and a retina-punishing 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, while the 21.5-, 23-, and 24-inch 30 Series makes do with a paltry 70,000:1 dynamic ratio at prices ranging from $270 to $330. Angry Birds arrives on webOS and Palm Pre, user productivity soon to plummet
Filed under: Games, webOS
Angry Birds has been one of the most popular games on the App Store for a coon's age. It's the number one paid app in pretty much every country. Now, at long last, those of us who own a webOS device will be launching birds and destroying stuff to our hearts' content. Yes, Angry Birds is on its way to the Palm Pre (and will soon follow on the Pixi).
PreCentral has shared a video of the avian antics, which you can check out after the beak. Break, rather ... Break.
WebOS users, get your credit cards ready and charge up your spare battery! Angry Birds should be appearing in the App Catalog any day now...

Nanotechnology enables ultra high-def LCDs, cheaper stacked-electrode OLED screens
Pixel density enthusiasts, pay close attention, because science is ready to blow your minds -- the University of Michigan has developed an LCD technology that can display their logo in a space just nine microns high. By creating a filter made of microscopic metal gratings with differently sized holes just a few hundred nanometers wide, researchers discovered they could precisely capture wavelengths associated to red, green and blue light, producing pixels roughly eight times smaller than those in the iPhone 4's famous screen, and entire images that could practically fit inside a single dot of Kopin's microdisplay.
Meanwhile, OLEDs (which don't require filters to produce their color) saw a nanotech breakthrough of their own last week, as a group at the University of Florida have discovered that carbon nanotubes can revitalize a once-inefficient but promising vertical stacking technique. Layering thin sheets of aluminum, carbon nanotubes, organic material and finally gold on top of a glass substrate, scientists have created OLEDs that promise to be cheaper, faster and require one-tenth of the power of those using polycrystalline silicon, and could theoretically be printed as a flexible display as well. Here's hoping we'll see the fruits of these fellows' labors soon -- we can't wait to pen a follow-up to this epic fight.Nanotechnology enables ultra high-def LCDs, cheaper stacked-electrode OLED screens originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 09:29:00 EDT. Froyo update for the Evo 4G is now rootable
The Froyo (Android 2.2) update for the Evo 4G has been rooted. While the current method is a bit hairy and involves timing and a bit of luck, the directions look very straightforward, and more important, not too dangerous to your precious hardware. The method is a mix of the recent exploit used on the Droid 2 and tools from the UnrEVOked team, and should leave you with a fully rooted and bootloader unlocked Evo, ready for your choice of a custom ROM. Remember, this sort of thing breaks warranties and has the potential to ruin things, even if this method looks fairly safe. Proceed at your own risk, or wait it out a few days to see if an easier method rolls around -- nobody here will blame you. But you trailblazers, hit the source link to give it a go!
